Whether you're a beginner or used to spending time on the trail, we bet you'll find something to suit you in this guide.
Hiking in Spain
Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe, making hiking here varied, challenging and beautiful. Magnificent scenery, panoramic views and vast landscapes are just some of the experiences you can expect. Mountain hikes can be found around the Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, and in the south around Cape Finisterre - the place formerly known as the 'end of the world'. For a real challenge, you can climb Spain's highest mountain - the Teide volcano in the Canary Islands.
Throughout Spain there are around 60,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails. The trails are classified by the colors red, yellow and green. The red trails are the longest distances - often from 50 kilometers upwards. Routes between 10 and 50 kilometers are classified as yellow. If you are traveling with children - look out for the green trails! They are even shorter and suitable for families or day trips.
El Camino de Santiago - the pilgrimage route
The most famous hiking trail is undoubtedly the Camino de Santiago, which ends in the northwest of Spain. The route is walked by tourists as well as residents of Spain. It consists of a number of pilgrimage routes, each with its own unique history. The nine most popular routes to walk are as follows:
- Camino Frances
- Camino Portugues
- Camino Portugues Coastal
- Camino del Norte
- Camino PrimitivoVia de la plata
- Le Puy Camino
- Camino Finisterre
- Camino Ingles
The trails start at different points in Spain and France and merge at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The total length of the routes varies and you can of course choose to walk only certain sections depending on your time and level of ambition - anything from a few kilometers to several miles. On most routes it is also possible to experience the landscape by bike or on horseback. A popular route to experience is the one from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, which runs through hilly landscapes, babbling brooks and lush meadows. If you're a history buff, you'll have a lot to gain here as the route offers a lot of sights and historical landmarks.
Most of the trails along the route are well maintained and are suitable for beginners as well as the more experienced. The best time to hike here is between April and June or in September, when the weather is good and most facilities along the route are open. July is the busiest time, so expect some congestion on the trail.
